How to get Udyam registration (free, step by step)

A plain-English, step-by-step guide to free Udyam (MSME) registration on the official Ministry of MSME portal: what you need, the steps, and the mistakes to avoid.

What Udyam registration is

Udyam registration is the government's registration for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The Ministry of MSME runs it on one official portal, udyamregistration.gov.in. Once you register you get a permanent registration number, and a certificate is issued online. The certificate has a dynamic QR code that links to your enterprise's page on the portal, and the registration never needs renewing (Udyam portal).

Why bother? Many government benefits ask for it. For example, under the Public Procurement Policy, Micro and Small Enterprises with Udyam registration can get tender sets free of cost and are exempted from paying earnest money deposit (EMD) (DC-MSME FAQ on Public Procurement Policy). Our guide on reading tender documents explains what that means.

Am I micro, small or medium?

Your category depends on two numbers: investment in plant and machinery or equipment, and annual turnover. The Udyam portal lists the current limits, revised from 1 April 2025 (Udyam portal):

MSME classification limits
CategoryInvestment up toTurnover up to
Micro₹2.5 crore₹10 crore
Small₹25 crore₹100 crore
Medium₹125 crore₹500 crore

You do not have to work these out yourself. The portal takes investment and turnover details linked to your PAN and GST automatically from government databases (Udyam portal).

What to keep ready

  • Aadhaar number. It must belong to the right person: the proprietor of a proprietorship, the managing partner of a partnership firm, or the karta of an HUF (Udyam registration form).
  • The mobile number linked to that Aadhaar, so you can receive the OTP.
  • PAN, plus GSTIN where GST applies to you. The portal says PAN and GSTIN, where applicable, have been required since 1 April 2021 (Udyam portal).
  • For a company, LLP, cooperative society, society or trust: the organisation or its authorised signatory gives its GSTIN and PAN along with the Aadhaar number (Udyam registration form).
  • Basic business details: name, address, bank account, what you make or do, and number of employees.

The portal says registration is fully online, paperless and based on self-declaration, and that no documents or proof have to be uploaded (Udyam portal).

Step by step

  1. Open udyamregistration.gov.in. Check the address bar carefully. It should end in .gov.in.
  2. Under "For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME", choose New Registration.
  3. Aadhaar verification: enter the Aadhaar number and the name exactly as it appears on Aadhaar, give consent and verify with the OTP sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile.
  4. PAN verification: choose your type of organisation, then enter and validate the PAN.
  5. Fill in the remaining sections: basic details, official address and plant/unit details. These are the section names the form uses (Udyam registration form). Add every activity you do. The portal lets you list manufacturing, service or both in one registration (Udyam portal).
  6. Check everything, then submit with the final OTP. Once the process is complete, your certificate is issued online.

Stuck? The portal says its single-window systems at Champions Control Rooms and District Industries Centres (DICs) help with the process. It also lists a grievance contact: email champions@gov.in, or call or WhatsApp +91 8308809334 (Mon–Fri, 10 AM–6 PM) (Udyam portal).

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Paying a website or agent. The portal says no private online or offline system, agency or person is authorised to do MSME registration, apart from the government portal and the government's single-window systems (Udyam portal). Many look-alike sites charge a fee. See how to spot scheme scams.
  • Registering twice. No enterprise can file more than one Udyam registration. Add activities to your existing registration instead (Udyam portal).
  • Keeping old registrations. If you hold an EM-II or UAM (Udyog Aadhaar) registration, the portal says you must re-register on Udyam. There is a "UAM Migration to Udyam" option for this (Udyam portal).
  • Using someone else's Aadhaar. Use the Aadhaar of the person the rules require, as listed above.

After you register

Save the PDF certificate and note your Udyam Registration Number. You will need it for things like registering as a seller on GeM and applying for the central schemes covered in our other guides.
